RUSH: The chemistry of desire - Group show
14 January - 28 February 2027

EN This exhibition examines the evolving landscape of queer intimacy in contemporary Europe, using primarily photography as a medium through which to explore the emergence and increasing visibility of chemsex as a significant cultural and public health phenomenon within queer communities in the decades following the AIDS crisis. Bringing together artists whose practices traverse the boundaries of contemporary fine art, documentary and social practice, the exhibition considers what the rise of chemsex reveals about desire, intimacy, connection, loneliness, community and care. Rather than approaching chemsex exclusively through the frameworks of addiction or public health, the exhibition situates it within the broader social and cultural context of contemporary queer life, considering the ways in which advances in HIV treatment, PrEP, digital dating and changing sexual and social networks have transformed experiences of intimacy and community. The project seeks to present a nuanced portrait of queer experience, acknowledging both the freedoms and vulnerabilities that shape intimacy after dark.
