In 2027, photography celebrates its 200th anniversary.
To mark this milestone, the French Ministry of Culture is launching a major celebration highlighting both historical and contemporary photographic creation, national and regional public collections, and photographic publishing. The programme will run from 1 September 2026 to 30 September 2027 across mainland France, overseas territories, and more than thirty countries worldwide. PhotoBrussels Festival is among the international events officially awarded the “Bicentenary of Photography” label. Exhibitions featured in the 2027 programme that engage with the history of the medium will be identified through dedicated signage, inviting visitors to reflect on 200 years of photographic history.
Themes may include:
Dialogues between historical and contemporary photographers
Photographic archives
Discoveries of collections
Artistic explorations of historical photographic techniques
The evolution of photographic technologies (including AI and other innovations)
Reinvention through experimentation
Documentary photography addressing historical events
Participating venues are not required to address these themes.
As with the previous ten editions, there is no imposed theme for the festival.

En 2027, la photographie fête ses 200 ans.
À cette occasion, le ministère de la Culture (France) lance une grande célébration qui mettra à l’honneur la création ancienne et contemporaine, les collections publiques nationales et territoriales, l’édition photographique, du 1er septembre 2026 au 30 septembre 2027, en France métropolitaine, dans les territoires ultramarins et dans plus de trente pays dans le monde. PhotoBrussels Festival fait partie des évènements hors de France labellisé « Bicentenaire de la photographie ». Les expositions du parcours 2027 qui auront un lien avec l’histoire du medium feront l’objet d’une signalétique spécifique et inviteront le public à s’interroger sur les 200 ans de l’histoire de la photographie.
Différents thèmes pourront être abordés :
lien entre photographe(s) historique(s) et photographe(s) contemporain(s)
archives photographiques
découverte d’une collection
travail plastique autour des techniques anciennes
évolution des techniques (IA et autres)
réinvention à travers une expérimentation
photo documentaire autour de faits historiques…
Il n’est pas obligatoire pour les lieux participants de traiter de ces thématiques.
Comme lors des 10 précédentes éditions, il n’y a pas de thème imposé.

In 2027 viert de fotografie haar 200ste verjaardag.
Ter gelegenheid hiervan organiseert het Franse Ministerie van Cultuur een grootschalige viering die zowel historische als hedendaagse fotografie, nationale en regionale openbare collecties en fotografische publicaties in de kijker zal zetten. Deze viering loopt van 1 september 2026 tot 30 september 2027 en vindt plaats in Europees Frankrijk, de overzeese gebieden en in meer dan dertig landen wereldwijd. PhotoBrussels Festival behoort tot de evenementen buiten Frankrijk die het label “Bicentenaire de la photographie” hebben ontvangen. De tentoonstellingen binnen het parcours van 2027 die een verband hebben met de geschiedenis van het medium zullen worden aangeduid met een specifieke signalisatie en het publiek uitnodigen om stil te staan bij 200 jaar fotografische geschiedenis.
Verschillende thema’s kunnen aan bod komen:
de relatie tussen historische fotografen en hedendaagse fotografen;
fotografische archieven;
de ontdekking van een collectie;
artistiek werk rond oude fotografische technieken;
de evolutie van technieken (AI en andere ontwikkelingen);
heruitvinding door middel van experiment;
documentaire fotografie rond historische gebeurtenissen;
Het is niet verplicht voor deelnemende locaties om deze thema’s te behandelen. Net als tijdens de tien vorige edities wordt er geen verplicht thema opgelegd.
