Joy and Retreat - Group show
20 January - 14 April 2027
EN The exhibition brings together a generation of Czech photographers looking at a world that seems to change faster than we are able to understand it. They photograph people, bodies, gestures, rooms, relationships, memories and small fragments of everyday life. Things that appear ordinary until, suddenly, they are not. Their photographs move between reality and fiction, document and invention, intimacy and performance. Some are carefully staged, others seem to have been caught almost by accident. Yet all of them share a certain uncertainty about what a photograph can still tell us about the truth. Perhaps this uncertainty is precisely what makes them truthful. At the centre of these works is the human being: fragile, theatrical, lonely, absurd, surrounded by images and still searching for something real. Photography becomes less a mirror of the world than a way of entering it, of looking beneath its surfaces and asking what remains when appearances begin to fall away. Joy and Retreat is therefore not simply about joy, nor is refuge merely a place in which to hide. Both are temporary states, small territories we construct for ourselves while the world outside continues to move. The artists gathered here look for them in bodies, relationships, memories and images. And perhaps photography itself is such a refuge: a brief attempt to hold on to something just before it disappears.
