The Limits of Belief - Andres Serrano (USA, 1950)
23 January - 27 February 2027
EN Andres Serrano explores the limits of what we believe, what we accept and what we reject. His work straddles the sacred and the profane, the private and the public, beauty and repulsion. Religion, the body, sexuality, death, violence, identity and power are recurring themes in his work. Serrano brings to light what usually remains hidden and places realities at the centre of our gaze that often lie beyond what we consider comfortable or acceptable. In this way, Serrano does not merely challenge his subjects: he also questions our own limits. What do we consider beautiful? How do we feel when faced with what seems obscene, sacred, threatening or acceptable? And to what extent are these boundaries determined by culture, faith, history and our personal convictions? This tension between attraction and repulsion lies at the heart of his practice. Serrano does not ask us to adopt a single, unambiguous stance, but to look a little longer. The Limits of Belief thus explores the extent of our convictions — and what happens when an image forces us to look beyond our own limits.
