EN A History of Press Photography and Media Concentration. Since 2026, 94% of Belgium’s daily press has been in the hands of a single shareholder. This unprecedented concentration of ownership comes in the very same year that photography celebrates its bicentennial. Since its origins, photography has maintained an almost organic relationship with the press: from the first illustrated publications to the “golden age” of photojournalism, newspapers have been essential venues for documenting reality. But this relationship has gradually begun to fray. With the advent of digital technology, declining circulation, and subsequent budget cuts, photography has lost much of the space once devoted to it. Today, hyperconcentration is bringing this slow disappearance to a close. The “Swallowed Image” chronicles this disappearance through three collections of images: the work of photographer Philippe Braquenier, editorial archives, and press clippings. These photographs examine the structures of a media system in flux. Housed in the offices of Médor magazine, the exhibition uses imagery to further its exploration of the transformations in the press and the conditions under which news is produced.
