FR As Real As It Gets explore le besoin humain d’évasion à travers le prisme de la culture aéronautique. Pendant le confinement, Thomas Nolf a redécouvert la fascination qu’il éprouvait depuis son enfance pour l’aviation. Il a installé la nouvelle version de Flight Simulator sur son ordinateur et s’est ainsi évadé virtuellement. Entre 2020 et 2024, Nolf a parcouru le globe, visitant des aéroports, rencontrant des pilotes de simulateurs de vol chez eux et explorant le plus grand aérodrome miniature du monde, situé à Hambourg. Le projet associe photographie, images simulées et documents d’archives à une installation pour explorer l’attrait romantique et onirique de l’aviation. Les images méticuleusement composées de Nolf évoquent l’esthétique des jeux vidéo, du cinéma et de la publicité. Par cette approche, il se situe à la frontière entre fiction et réalité, interrogeant à la fois l’idée idéalisée de l’évasion et la nature artificielle et simulée de la photographie.

NL As Real As It Gets is een fotografieproject van Thomas Nolf (1986, Kortrijk) dat de menselijke behoefte aan ontsnapping verkent door de lens van de luchtvaartcultuur. Tijdens de COVID-19 lockdown herontdekte Nolf z’n kinderlijke fascinatie voor vliegen. In een periode waarin het verboden was om te reizen, installeerde hij de nieuwe versie van Microsoft Flight Simulator op zijn computer en vluchtte hij alsnog virtueel weg. Tussen 2020 en 2024 reisde hij de wereld rond, bezocht verschillende luchthavens, ontmoette vluchtsimulatorpiloten bij hen thuis en bezocht het grootste modelvliegveld ter wereld, Miniatur Wunderland in Hamburg. Nolf combineert in het project fotografie, gesimuleerde beelden, tekstfragmenten en archiefmateriaal met een installatie om de romantische en dromerige aantrekkingskracht van luchtvaart te verkennen. Zijn nauwkeurige composities doen denken aan de gestileerde, bijna surrealistische esthetiek van videogames, cinema en reclame. Met deze benadering balanceert hij op de grens tussen fictie en werkelijkheid en bevraagt hij het geïdealiseerde idee van ontsnapping en de kunstmatige, gesimuleerde aard van fotografie.

EN As Real As It Gets explores the human need for escape through the lens of aviation culture. During the COVID-19 lockdown, Nolf rediscovered his childhood fascination with flying. He installed the new version of Flight Simulator on his computer and took to virtual skies to escape. Between 2020 and 2024, Nolf traveled the globe, visiting airports, meeting flight simulator pilots in their homes, and exploring the world’s largest model airfield in Hamburg. The project brings together photography, simulated images and archival material with an installation to delve into the romantic and dreamlike allure of aviation. Nolf’s meticulously composed images evoke the aesthetics of video games, cinema, and advertising. This approach blurs the line between fiction and reality, highlighting the idealized concept of escape and the artificial, simulated nature of photography itself.
