Japanesque - Group show
17 January - 27 February 2027
EN In January & February 2026, the art galleries Hopstreet Gallery and IN-DEPENDANCE by IBASHO from Antwerp swapped exhibition spaces. For 2027, Hopstreet has invited IBASHO to collaborate on an exhibition featuring four female artists, entitled ‘Japanesque’. Sayuri Ichida and Norio Takasugi are two Japanese artists who both live abroad but share interesting common ground, even though their approaches are different. Takasugi explores the Japanese aesthetic of wabi-sabi: beauty in imperfection, transience and natural variation. Ichida focuses more on personal memories, identity, absence and the transience of existence. One could therefore link their work through the way in which they expand photography into a tangible, personal and contemplative art form. The fundamental similarity is that both artists Julie Cockburn and Susanne Wellm deconstruct and reconstruct photography. They reveal that an image never merely shows what once stood before the camera: materials, interventions, memories and the viewer’s gaze all influence what an image means. Cockburn does this primarily by transforming the individual image using colour, thread and collage. Wellm does so mainly by interweaving images and layers of time. It is precisely this combination of photography, textiles and conceptual imagery that makes them interesting within the field of contemporary visual art.
