Rich and Poor - Jim Goldberg
21 January - 16 May 2027

EN Drawing from works in the collection of Astrid Ullens de Schooten Whettnall, the exhibition revisits Rich and Poor, the landmark series created by American photographer Jim Goldberg between 1977 and 1985. This seminal body of work explores social class, identity and the distance between different realities, questions that remain strikingly relevant today.

Born in 1953 in New Haven, Connecticut, Jim Goldberg lives and works in Los Angeles. Since the 1970s, his practice has combined photography, text, archival material and personal testimony to explore class, marginality, memory and identity. In Rich and Poor, his distinctive approach gives a voice to the people he photographs, challenging the ways we look at one another and understand the society we share.

The exhibition will also bring together other bodies of Goldberg’s work, in a presentation specially conceived for the occasion.

His work is held in major international collections, including MoMA, SFMOMA, the Getty and the Whitney Museum of American Art. He joined Magnum Photos in 2002.
