Pigeon Paradise - Lucas Castel
23 January - 20 February 2027

EN Pigeon Paradise explores the complex relationship between humans and pigeons through the practice of pigeon keeping. Originally a popular amateur pursuit that emerged in the mining regions of northern Europe during the twentieth century, it has evolved over recent decades into a lucrative international business.

Lucas Castel questions our relationship with the living world in the Anthropocene, an era in which human control and domination over the bird — from genetics and health to diet and morphology — appear to have become all-encompassing.

The pigeon fanciers are seen only through their hands. Caressing, reassuring, controlling or killing, these hands transform the birds into a select group of elite athletes, symbols of victory, objects of fascination and sentient beings.

Although the exploitation of the bird is undeniable, the sport relies almost entirely on a factor beyond human intervention: the mystery of the pigeon’s sense of orientation and its extraordinary ability to find its way back to the loft.
