EN In response to fractures in space and society, Pauline Vanden Neste and Tom Lyon take hold of the camera, its narrative power, and the opportunities for encounters it creates. They portray a territory subject to liberal gentrification policies and the people who live there, offering a formulation, a thought, and an emotional interpretation of the worlds and ideas surrounding the canal. The duo's photographic practice begins with surveying an area, the spontaneous encounters they make there, and informal discussions around initial images. Then comes a phase of documentation involving readings, research, and exchanges with the actors concerned with the territory in question. Over time, through back-and-forth, they develop other perspectives, digging deeper into the neighborhood and the subjects that traverse it. Confronted with the limitations of the still image, they gradually integrate written and sound traces into their practice – as a way to give back space or voice to the people they encounter through the project.
FR En réaction aux fractures de l’espace et de la société, Pauline Vanden Neste et Tom Lyon se saisissent de l’appareil photographique, de sa force narrative et des possibilités de rencontre qu’il provoque. Iels dressent le portrait d’un territoire sujet aux politiques libérales gentrificatives et des personnes qui l’habitent, proposant une mise en forme, en pensée et en émotion, des mondes et des idées qui entourent le canal. La pratique du duo de photographes démarre par l’arpentage d’une zone, des rencontres spontanées qu’iels y font et des discussions informelles autour de premières images. Puis vient une phase de documentation autour de lectures, de recherches et d’échanges avec les acteurices concerné.es par le territoire en question. Avec le temps, des va-et-vient, iels développent d’autres regards, creusent le quartier et les sujets qui le traversent. Confrontés aux limites de l’image fixe, iels intègrent progressivement des traces écrites et sonores à leur pratique - comme une manière de restituer la place ou la parole aux personnes rencontrées à travers le projet.

Ze schetsen een portret van een gebied dat onderhevig is aan liberale gentrificatiepolitiek en van de mensen die er wonen, waarbij ze een vormgeving, een gedachte en een emotionele interpretatie van de werelden en ideeën rond het kanaal voorstellen. De fotografische praktijk van het duo begint met het verkennen van een gebied, de spontane ontmoetingen die ze daar hebben en informele gesprekken rond de eerste beelden. Vervolgens komt een documentatiefase met lezingen, onderzoek en uitwisselingen met de actoren die betrokken zijn bij het betreffende gebied. In de loop van de tijd, door heen en weer te gaan, ontwikkelen ze andere perspectieven, verdiepen ze zich in de wijk en de onderwerpen die er doorheen lopen. Geconfronteerd met de beperkingen van het stilstaande beeld, integreren ze geleidelijk geschreven en geluidsfragmenten in hun praktijk - als een manier om ruimte of stem terug te geven aan de mensen die ze door het project ontmoeten.
