FR How the Light Gets In réunit deux artistes belges qui explorent, chacun à leur manière, la tension entre rupture et renouveau. Le peintre Stefan Peters (°1978) et le photographe Peter H. Waterschoot (°1969) partagent une fascination pour la puissance de la lumière et la manière dont elle peut s’ancrer dans la matière et l’image.
Là où Peters, à travers des paysages contemplatifs et imaginaires, laisse surgir des ouvertures inattendues par des détours picturaux, Waterschoot cherche, en photographie et en scénographie, des instants fragiles à la fois esthétiques et éthérés. Il s’inscrit dans cette même démarche avec sa recherche d’images photographiques au seuil du pertinent, de l’éthéré et de l’esthétique
Waterschoot se consacre de plus en plus à l’expérimentation avec les matériaux et les dispositifs, permettant ainsi une lecture multiple des images. Avec ces deux travaux exposés ensemble, peinture et photographie, l’accent se déplace de la référence littérale à Leonard Cohen How the Light Gets In, vers une formulation plus exploratoire. Il ne s’agit pas tant de savoir où la lumière pénètre, mais d’être attentif à savoir quand et comment.
NL How the Light Gets In brengt twee Belgische kunstenaars samen die elk op hun eigen manier de spanning tussen breuk en vernieuwing onderzoeken. Schilder Stefan Peters (°1978) en fotograaf Peter H. Waterschoot (°1969) delen een fascinatie voor de kracht van licht en hoe het zich kan verankeren in materie en beeld.
Waar Peters, door contemplatieve en imaginaire landschappen, onverwachte openingen laat ontstaan via picturale omwegen, zoekt Waterschoot in fotografie en scenografie naar kwetsbare momenten die zowel esthetisch als etherisch zijn. Zijn werk volgt dezelfde benadering, waarbij hij fotografische beelden zoekt op de grens van relevantie, etherischheid en esthetiek.
Waterschoot richt zich steeds meer op experimenten met materialen en opstellingen, waardoor meerdere interpretaties van de beelden mogelijk zijn. Samen verschuift met deze twee getoonde werken — schilderkunst en fotografie — de nadruk van de letterlijke verwijzing naar Leonard Cohens How the Light Gets In naar een meer exploratieve benadering. Het gaat niet zozeer om waar het licht binnenkomt, maar om aandachtig te zijn voor wanneer en hoe dat gebeurt.
EN How the Light Gets In brings together two Belgian artists who each explore, in their own way, the tension between rupture and renewal. Painter Stefan Peters (b. 1978) and photographer Peter H. Waterschoot (b. 1969) share a fascination with the power of light and the way it can embed itself in matter and image.
Where Peters, through contemplative and imaginary landscapes, allows unexpected openings to emerge via pictorial detours, Waterschoot seeks, in photography and scenography, fragile moments that are both aesthetic and ethereal. His work follows the same approach, searching for photographic images on the threshold of relevance, the ethereal, and the aesthetic.
Waterschoot increasingly focuses on experimentation with materials and setups, allowing multiple readings of the images. Together, these two bodies of work — painting and photography — shift the emphasis from the literal reference to Leonard Cohen’s How the Light Gets In toward a more exploratory formulation. The focus is not so much on where the light enters, but on being attentive to when and how it does
