We invite you to Molinier on Display, a lecture with performance at our gallery in Brussels. During this evening, we will delve into the work of Pierre Molinier (FR, 1900-1976) and explore his influence on contemporary art and gender representation. Christophe Gaillard will discuss the artistic and symbolic power of Molinier’s oeuvre, while Sonia Mutaganzwa (FOMU, BE) will draw a fascinating connection between Molinier and Cindy Sherman. Additionally, the performance Lieslaarsman, presented by Wide Vercnocke, will expand our perspective beyond the heteronormative framework.

Dans le cadre du PhotoBrusselsFestival, se tiendra un temps d'entretien et puis de rencontre avec Alan Tex autour duquel "Tex&co" est construite. Rendez-vous donc au 9, rue Lesbroussart pour cette petite causerie ce dimanche 16 février de 15 à 17 heures. 

Une belle occasion pour (re)découvrir Tex, né en 1951 à Bruxelles, bien entourés d'une nouvelle série inédite d'Estelle Lagarde, de pièces historiques généreusement confiées par mes collèques de la Box Galerie - un Khaldeï, de la photo anonyme - et de la galerie Pol Lemétais - pour du Tichy et un Allen. • 6:00 PM – 7:30 PM: Guided tour of the exhibition by the artists, with a complimentary drink.

• 7:30 PM – 8:30 PM: Public forum "Résister par l’image" & video screening of our "secret" happening, which will take place on Sunday, February 9.

Elise Mazac alias Mazaccio (1988) et Robert Drowilal (1986) sont deux artistes français officiant sous le nom Mazaccio & Drowilal. Influencés tous deux par l’art conceptuel, la peinture Pop et la Pictures Generation, ils mènent un travail para-photographique basé autour du principe de "collimage". Leur travaux abordent divers sujets comme la célébrité, l’image de marque, et l’identité.

En 2013, le duo a été lauréat de la 3e résidence BMW au Musée Nicéphore Niépce. En 2017, ils ont été résidents à l’International Studio & Curatorial Program (ISCP) à New York.
Leur travail a été exposé dans le cadre d’expositions individuelles aux Rencontres d’Arles (2014), au French Institute, New York (2015), aux Abattoirs, Toulouse (2018), au Musée des Beaux-Arts de la Chaux-de- Fonds (2021), et d’expositions collectives à la Galleria Continua, Les Moulins, au Musée Nicéphore Niépce et au Palais des Beaux-Arts, Paris.
Parallèlement, ils ont publié de nombreux livres d’artiste parmi lesquels Wild Style (Camera, 2014), Champagne (RVB Books, 2015), The Happiness Project (RVB Books, 2018), Paparazzi (RVB Books, 2021), et Iconology (RVB Books, 2024).
Ils sont visiting lecturers à l'Ecole cantonale d’art de Lausanne (ECAL) en Suisse.

Avec leur projet de recherche intitulé "Paravent Pictures", Mazaccio & Drowilal font partie des lauréats de la 6e édition du programme de soutien à la recherche et à la création de l’Institut pour la photographie, consacrée à l’étude historique, théorique ou à la recherche créative des murs d’images.

En tant qu’artistes, Mazaccio & Drowilal s’intéressent à ce qui constitue la toile de fond de nos vies : les images produites par la société de consommation, leur abondance et leurs modes de diffusion.
Quels récits véhiculent-elles ? Comment façonnent-elles nos visions du monde et nos identités ? Pour interroger la notion de mur d’images, ils prennent pour objet d’expérimentation plastique le paravent. En s’appuyant sur différentes disciplines, allant de l’histoire de l’art aux visual studies en passant par l’anthropologie, la psychanalyse et les théories de la communication, ils s'intéressent à la fabrique des icônes et des role-models, ainsi qu’aux concepts de persona et d’extimité, qui leur sont intrinsèquement liés.

Sections of a Happy Moment from 2007, depicts a single moment in the life of a Chinese family on a sunlit square, surrounded by clean social housing. The figures – grouped in a circular composition around a ball hanging in mid-air – have been caught in an intimate family moment by a multitude of photo cameras, placed all around the scene.

Presented in a slideshow format, the succession of images that circumscribe ‘place’ gradually erase expectations of movement. As the slideshow progresses, the playfulness of the moment becomes like heavy, cast matter. Indeed, the scene trades in its momentary lightness for a feeling of being controlled like propaganda. If one takes into count the Chinese nationality of the family, the idea of control adds another layer.

Images of the children, their parents and grandparents, all shot in the artist’s studio, were put together with hundreds of images of a square in between the social housing units of Renaet Braem in Antwerp (Kiel). In 1950 Braem was finally given the opportunity to put into practice on a large scale the ideas of CIAM, of which both he and Le Corbusier were part.

As part of a photo edition derived from Sections of a Happy Moment, one image is part of the exhibition A Public Affair. Chantal Pattyn will talk to David Claerbout about the intentions of this great work, dealing with the abstraction of human emotions, the notion of time, the camera used as a security tool and the ambition to bring to life the bright future of the era when this architectural infrastructure was created.

La Nombreuse invites you to take a closer look at the Post Tourism exhibition by attending a talk by artist Ada Zielińska and art historian Danielle Seynaeve. For an hour, they will explore together the themes of the sublime, desolation, scopism and the impulses behind artistic creation. Ada will look back on her career, from her days burning cars to her decision to explore landscapes ravaged by natural disasters. Danielle will enrich the discussion with theoretical perspectives, illuminating this quest for the sublime at the intersection of destruction and beauty by drawing on the writings of Edmund Burke, Immanuel Kant, Tarkovsky and Joel Kovel. This inspiring dialogue will conclude with a moment of collective sharing with the audience.

Memory and artificial intelligence in photography

Claudia Jaguaribe will present her project Bárbaras which results from extensive historical, iconographic, and photographic research into women who played important roles in Brazilian history but are often overlooked or forgotten.

Alexey Yurenev will present his project Silent hero which is a journey through history, spaces, and time to renegotiate the narrative of his ancestor’s wartime experience.
