Jeunesse placée – Geplaatste Jeugd - Eloïse Brunet & Romain Cavallin

FR Eloïse Brunet et Romain Cavallin ont découvert l’univers des Institutions Publiques de Protection de la Jeunesse (IPPJ) en janvier 2025. Tous deux y débutent alors un cycle d’atelier photographique en compagnie des jeunes placés judiciairement à Wauthier-Braine. Âgés de 14 à 18 ans, ces jeunes vivent des journées rythmées par une discipline omniprésente. Chaque geste y est discuté, contrôlé.

Ensemble, ils se sont servis de la photographie pour créer un terrain de jeux. Par l’intermédiaire du flash, de l’utilisation du mouvement et du cadrage mais surtout grâce à la complicité qui s’est nouée au fil des ateliers, ils ont créé un espace né de leur imaginaire, où tous tentent de gommer pour un temps les limites imposées par le périmètre et la rigueur propre au centre fermé. Les images mêlant portraits respectant l’anonymat imposé par la justice à des scènes quasi anodines rappellent pourtant l’univers carcéral qu’ils n’ont jamais quitté.

Via Eloise ensuite, s’en est suivi une correspondance avec les internes du foyer Lilla Monod, qui accueille des jeunes filles placées par un juge de paix. Sans se connaître, ces jeunes se découvrent semblables. Avec ce projet toujours en cours, tous et toutes partagent des expériences de vie où l’amour, la confiance et l’espoir semblent avoir fait défaut. Tout comme la volonté tenace de faire maintenant autrement.

NL Eloïse Brunet en Romain Cavallin ontdekten in januari 2025 de wereld van de Openbare Instellingen voor Jeugdbescherming (IPPJ). Ze startten beiden een reeks fotografieworkshops met jongeren die onder gerechtelijk toezicht in Wauthier-Braine stonden. De jongeren, van 14 tot 18 jaar, leven dagen die worden bepaald door alomtegenwoordige discipline, waarbij elke handeling wordt besproken en gecontroleerd.

Samen gebruikten de kunstenaars en deelnemers fotografie om een speelruimte te creëren. Door het gebruik van flitslicht, beweging, kadrering en — vooral — de vertrouwensband die zich tijdens de workshops ontwikkelde, creëerden ze een ruimte ontsproten uit hun verbeelding, waar ze tijdelijk de beperkingen van het centrum en de strikte routines konden vergeten. De beelden, die portretten tonen met respect voor de anonimiteit opgelegd door justitie en ogenschijnlijk alledaagse scènes, herinneren toch aan de carcerale omgeving die de jongeren nooit volledig hebben verlaten.

Via Eloïse breidde dit werk zich later uit tot een correspondentie met de bewoners van het Lilla Monod-huis, dat meisjes opvangt die door een vrederechter zijn geplaatst. Ondanks dat ze elkaar niet kenden, ontdekten de jongeren overeenkomsten in hun ervaringen. Met dit doorlopende project delen alle deelnemers levensverhalen waarin liefde, vertrouwen en hoop vaak ontbraken, maar waar ook een vasthoudend verlangen naar verandering en een andere toekomst zichtbaar is.

EN Eloïse Brunet and Romain Cavallin discovered the world of the Public Institutions for Youth Protection (IPPJ) in January 2025. They both began a cycle of photography workshops with young people placed under judicial supervision in Wauthier-Braine. Aged 14 to 18, these youths live days structured by pervasive discipline, where every gesture is discussed and controlled.

Together, the artists and participants used photography to create a playground. Through the use of flash, movement, framing, and — most importantly — the rapport developed during the workshops, they created a space born from their imagination, where for a time, they attempted to erase the limitations imposed by the facility and its strict routines. The resulting images, mixing portraits that respect the anonymity required by the justice system with seemingly mundane scenes, nevertheless recall the carceral environment from which the youths have never truly left.

Through Eloïse, this work later extended into a correspondence with residents of the Lilla Monod home, which houses girls placed there by a magistrate. Despite not knowing each other, the young people discovered shared experiences. With this ongoing project, all participants share life experiences marked by a lack of love, trust, and hope — but also by a steadfast desire to act differently moving forward.
